Los Angeles Towne Street Theatre will open its 2017 Literary Series with a dramatic reading of Octavia Butler's best-selling 1979 novel KINDRED on Sunday, August 6, at 2:00 pm at MAAA. Join in a "talk back" after the reading with Dr. Ayana Jamieson, founder of the Octavia Butler Legacy Network and the scholar most familiar with Butler's work. Eso Won Books will be on hand, if you wish to purchase any of Octavia Butler's books.

KINDRED is described as "part time-travel tale and part slave narrative." Dana, an African American woman, is transported from 1976 Los Angeles to early nineteenth century Maryland. She meets her ancestors — Rufus, a spoiled, self-destructive white slaveholder, and Alice, a proud black freewoman forced into slavery later in life.

KINDRED examines the dynamics and dilemmas of antebellum slavery and its legacy in present American society. The novel also explores the intersection of power, gender, and race issues and speculates on the prospects of future egalitarianism.
